We Said

Robbie Stockdale said:

"There’s different ways we win as an academy.

"So, having five players on the bench for a Premier League game is a big win for us. But you’re right, when it comes to 90 minutes on an evening or a weekend, we set up to try and win the game.

"I think there are certain games when we didn’t get we deserved in the season, there are certain games we did and that was one of those tonight.

"Really positive performances, really good individual performances. Obviously we changed the team around a little bit to get minutes into players that haven’t played a lot so it’s a really pleasing night for us as an U21s team.”

Stats

Robbie Stockdale's side were drawn in Group D with Luton, Peterborough United and Nottingham Forest, meeting all three clubs both home and away by December.

Following his first Toon goal at York City in the National League Cup, 19 year-old Afner Ca got off the mark on home territory.

Newcastle U21s won their opening Premier League Cup tie of the season on Friday, comfortably beating their Luton Town counterparts to register a first win four games at Whitley Park.

A first half own goal gave United the lead when Johnny Emerson hit a low driven cross that deflected in off Dempsey Crace.

Defender Henry Johnson headed in the second in the 53rd minute from a free-kick before a brace from striker Afner Ca completed the home scoring.

Ca's first came in the 77th minute when he took a ball down the right before cutting inside and firing an unstoppable shot in from a tight angle.

His second came just five minutes later when Sam Alabi hit the post and Ca tucked in the rebound.

The Hatters did manage a late consolation when Jack Lorentzen-Jones exchanged passes from a free-kick and hammered home.
