Goals

6 mins  Brandon Thomas-Asante bent a low ball into the Newcastle box from the right, but it ran too far in front of his intended target Ephron Mason-Clark and reached the advancing Lukas Hornicek.

The Newcastle goalkeeper spread himself and saw the ball rebound back off his knee. Hornicek then sprang forward and made a two-handed attempt at reaching the loose ball, only for Sidiki Cherif to appear and tumble emphatically after coming into contact with his opponent.

Jack Rudoni sent Hornicek the wrong way from the penalty spot. 0-1

Half time: Coventry 1 Newcastle 0

48 mins a throw-in from the Coventry right was headed out of the box by Malick Thiaw as far as Cherif, who found the time and freedom to open up a shooting chance and poke a low effort home from the edge of the area in front of the away contingent. 0-2

70 mins Yoane Wissa funnelled the ball across the field towards Nico Gonzalez, who helped it on towards Sven Botman, towards the left midway in the City half. With no home player seeking to intervene, the visiting defender approached the edge of the box before letting fly with a shot that sizzled into the top corner of Rushworth's goal.  1-2

81 mins Lewis Hall failed to prevent substitute Tatsuhiro Sakamoto from wriggling past him and heading into the box. He was out-muscled by Joelinton, but an ill-advised escape route saw him play himself into trouble, sending Cherif tumbling with a rash intervention.

The loose ball reached recently-arrived replacement Ellis Simms, whose shot flicked in off Thiaw.
1-3

86 mins A scarcely believable fourth home goal arrived when Rudoni played the ball infield from the Coventry left to Stephen Mfuni, who ambled away from Gonzalez and then evaded Dedic before swinging his foot at the ball and finding the far corner of the goal with a low drive.

18 year-old Mfuni overtook Robbie Keane as City's youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer. 1-4

Full time: Coventry 4 Newcastle 1

We Said

Matthais Jaissle said:

"That's hard. That's punishment in this league. We controlled many phases but it's not enough.

"In the boxes the games are decided. In both boxes we were not clean. It's something we need to learn fast.

"The momentum was there. We have a young squad but that shouldn't be an excuse. It was a tough game in general. The injured players are hopefully getting more game minutes.

"Today if you see the whole picture it was not the worst game. I apologise to fans because they deserved a different result.

"There were bits that were good but in both boxes, to defend our own goal we need to improve and also score goals.

"The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.

"We're frustrated. The lads, as well. It's a feeling you don't want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win.

"We can only apologise to the fans who came here, they deserve a different result. We need to analyse it, clearly.

On the returning Dan Burn, Amar Dedic, Joelinton and Will Osula:

"Unfortunately, the match minutes were really limited (for them).

"We need to be smart because we had so many injuries already, so we followed the advice. We took the guys to the limit of what they could do.

"I am happy that they are back but it will take another couple of weeks before they are physically back to their best again.”

On the injury that forced Bazoumana Toure off:

"Let's see. It's too early to say anything. Hopefully it's nothing serious."

They Said

Frank Lampard said:

"Very, very satisfying. It's so hard to win (in the Premier League).

"We played like the team that we want to be here. There is so much spirit and energy in the group and we know we are going to have to suffer a lot this season. The work ethic of the boys and the belief... you get what you deserve, which was great finishes.

"We haven't quite had that rub of the green this season that would help us nick more points.

It was a complete performance. We have to keep our feet on the ground. It's a great feeling for the players to feel that. We have to be excited and I'm seeing players in my eyes that are developing quite quickly.

"A lot of players had low Premier League minutes, or zero Premier League minutes - Jack Rudoni, (Brandon) Thomas Asante, (Ephron) Mason-Clark, a lot of them.

"So is it human nature in the first few games we've had two top teams in the league (Arsenal and Manchester City) and we've had Brighton and we've gone: 'hmm, it's not easy here'.

"This (victory) gives good confidence, so it's the balance of confidence against over-confidence. But it's great when you have a template of feeling when you get a result of that level.

"We are going to be a relative underdog in pretty much every game, so we have to maximise everything beyond the limit. It's a good feeling for the players.

"They need to keep their feet on the ground because the next one is tough and the one after that is tough. We looked like a team that was hard for teams to come here (and face) tonight. That's the feeling we haven't had in our first home games this season.

"They have to stay humble to that and understand. Every part of the level has gone up."

On teenage goalscorers Sidiki Cherif and Stephen Mfuni:

"Their attitude and the way they are is top level. They want to learn. They've settled quickly. Steph is going to be a top player in every sense. Unfortunately he's not ours (he's on loan from Manchester City) -  he's shown incredible maturity.

"We have to keep our feet on the ground because it's so hard in this league. If you think you have cracked it you haven't. Good feeling but don't get over excited. Enjoy the moment."

Stats

1-4 losses at Leeds and Coventry represent Newcastle's worst successive Premier League away results since December 2012, when they followed up a 3-4 defeat at Manchester United by going down 3-7 at Arsenal.

Sven Botman's fourth PL goal was the first not to be scored with a header. His previous three came away at Sheffield United (won 8-0 in October 2023), away at Liverpool (lost 2-4 in January 2024) and at home to Brentford (lost 2-3 in February 2026).

The Dutchman goes level with current colleague Malick Thiaw and one behind Dan Burn.

The Coventry Build
ing Society Arena became the 62nd different ground to have hosted Newcastle in the Premier League, Coventry City the eleventh of the 50 sides we've faced to have played in more than one permanent home (Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers, Coventry City, Derby County, Everton, Leicester City, Manchester City, mackems, Southampton, Spurs and West Ham).

United won both previous visits to this venue when known as the Ricoh Arena: a 3-2 League Cup success during 2008 and a 2-0 Championship victory the following year.

The Sky Blues had lost all seven home and away meetings with Newcastle since their 4-1 PL success at Highfield Road in October 1999.

United have conceded no less than four PL goals from the penalty spot quicker than in this game:

2 mins Sergio Aguero for Manchester City (a) Feb 2015 (lost 0-5)
4 mins Stefano Eranio for Derby County (a) Dec 1997 (lost 0-1)
4 mins Neal Maupay for Brighton & Hove Albion (h) Sep 2020 (lost 0-3)
5 mins David Dunn for Blackburn Rovers (a) Oct 2002 (lost 2-5)

Waffle

Another bewilderingly bad performance from Newcastle saw them deservedly on the wrong end of a 1-4 defeat that was every bit as painful as last month's Monday night mauling at Leeds.

Seeking their first-ever Premier League home win at the CBS Arena, Frank Lampard's side had started positively before Lukas Hornicek was punished for failing to collect a pass when
Sidiki Cherif tumbled over as the goalkeeper sought to claim the rebound.

Jack Rudoni netted the resultant penalty after just six minutes and although the Magpies came to dominate the remainder of the half, their attempts at finding an equaliser were in equal parts haphazard and unconvincing.

That was epitomised by centre forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, whose pace twice got him into scoring positions - only for both efforts to be blocked when goals looked inevitable. Our in-game description of him as a belated Miggy Almiron replacement may be harsh, but the Belgian seems to have similar issues in adjusting to this league as the Paraguayan thus far.

Such was the collective poorness of United's first half display that interval changes looked inevitable, only for an unchanged side to return and promptly concede again almost immediately.

Less than three minutes had elapsed when a throw-in from the Coventry right was taken with Joe Willock off the pitch for treatment, ending up with
Sidiki Cherif firing into the corner of the net.

That prompted the introduction of Amar Dedic, Bazoumana Toure and Joelinton; the Brazilian's first appearance of the season seeing him bring much-needed presence and bite within midfield - home players visibly backing off him.

The goal that looked to have got the lilac-clad Magpies back in the game arrived from the most unlikely of sources; Sven Botman's left boot connecting with an unstoppable shot from distance with 20 minutes of normal time left.

However no equaliser came and United's first-ever defeat at the CBS Arena moved a stage closer in the 81st minute after errors from Lewis Hall, Joelinton and Thiaw gave Ellis Simms a chance to shoot.

Brandon Thomas-Assante then struck a post from distance before Coventry's first top-flight home win since 2001 was sealed by teenager Stephen Mfuni, who further exposed the visiting defence.

Conceding that goal saw Newcastle match their previous heaviest top-flight loss to City - the infamous 1-4 Highfield Road reverse in 1999 - when the Magpies went down to ten men at 0-2.

As one long-suffering fan said at full time tonight, the knives would be out for Eddie Howe after these two 1-4 losses. That's not the case for his successor, despite the negative reaction from many of the away supporters who stuck it out until full time.

Victory tonight would have elevated United into fourth, but the manner of this defeat  - alongside unconvincing displays in games that we won - raises further doubts as to precisely what this version of Newcastle United actually amounts to.

A reluctance to rely on summer signings Bamba, Toure and Steur thus far has been compounded by what looks at this point in time like misplaced trust in Willock and Murphy, leaving us in the bugger's muddle of a midfield that offers no protection to the defence and little assistance to the attack.

Lacking any cohesive pattern of play, we seem particularly ill-suited to the style of long forward balls played in the vague direction of the corner flags, tempting full backs into unwise forays and inviting counter attacks. Botman may have put his colleagues further up the field to shame with his finish tonight, but he's no more of a goalscorer than he is a playmaker.

Attempting to repeat the hard luck stories after the Elland Road misadventure won't wash this time round. Jaissle's muddled Magpies were humiliated here by a rather less talented Coventry outfit than Leeds were. It doesn't bear thinking the damage a good team might inflict on us with these tactics.

There's a credibility issue those fans who struggle to match the manager's stated philosophy with the reality of what once again unfolded disastrously before their eyes here. Talking a good fight is one thing, but failing to send out a side that embodies that is something rather more alarming.

Far from the promised poise and pressing is an incoherent mess when we're found continually wanting in composure and common sense. There needs to be more to coaching and leadership than the arm-waving and smart suits that we've seen at pitchside so far. Never mind how poor our defence was, scoring just once against a City side that were completely open down the middle almost defies logic.

As Coventry favourites The Specials once sang, "stop your messing around...." More of this against Villa at Gallowgate this coming Saturday will leave "the people getting angry."
