Pointless after the opening three games and with hopes of progression over, Newcastle U21s won their final National League group stage tie at Victoria Park on Tuesday night.

The hosts included former Magpie reserve Luke Charman in their line-up and he headed a left wing cross off the bar within three minutes of the first whistle.

The lilac-clad visitors took a ninth minute lead when a long ball forward reached Johnny Emerson on the right flank and his low centre was turned home by Kyran Thompson.

17 year-old Thompson saw his 21st minute shot turned away by Nathan Fisher for a corner, before the hosts levelled five minutes later when Jack Nolan headed Terry Bondo's cross in.

Robbie Stockdale's side regained the lead in fortunate circumstances ten minutes before the interval; Thompson's left-footed effort from outside the box taking a sizeable deflection off Reiss McNally and then fumbled over the line by Fisher. The NL reporter noted it as an og for the defender as did HUFC.

The second half ended with no further scoring, Newcastle winning their first game in this competition in six attempts.
