Goals

36 mins  Joao Gomes strolled over the halfway line in possession before knocking the ball out to Alysson on the Villa right. Matty Cash threatened to overlap to his right, but the Brazilian opted to turn infield and play a short pass to Gomes, who was able to advance before hanging up a right-footed cross to the far edge of the six yard box.

With Lukas Hornicek opting to remain on his line, Johan Manzambi peeled away from Lewis Miley and had space and time to guide a header into the Gallowgate End net for his third Villa goal.

We Said

Matthias Jaissle said:

"It was a game where we were dominating. Overall I thought I was seeing a team giving a response.

"We had many situations where you saw that we were going to win that game and then we conceded a goal. We also need to be honest. We were shaky until half-time but then after that we showed a good response after half time.

"The second 45 minutes were again really aggressive. We won the important duels. Unfortunately we were just not smart enough in our decision making in the final third so that is something we need to improve.

"There were many occasions where we didn't find the right pass. Sometimes not the right timing. These things need to be combined pretty soon to be more efficient.

"I think the structure and discipline was good but not all the time, and in the Premier League against a strong opponent, one occasion is enough to concede a goal and that was too easy - losing a man in the box, we need to put pressure on the cross.

"Well, we're frustrated with the result. We wanted to give our fans here at home a better one. When you go through the match, I think the response was there, especially until we conceded the first goal.

"We dominated the game, we controlled it, without being constantly in the opposition box. Yes, this is something we need to work on. That's also part of the truth, that the team was a bit shaky after the goal we conceded, but when the lads came out in the second half, I think straight away you felt that energy, that belief again, that today at least we want to go for the draw, if not for the win even.

"The efficiency in the opposition box was then missing. That's clearly something we need to work on.

"Between the two boxes, everything was quite solid. Against a strong opponent, we made again a next step in the dual behaviour, in the aggressiveness, but in the final third we were lacking the decision-making today, or the decision-making was not good enough to be even more efficient and to create even more chances.

"And the few chances which should be also enough to score, we didn't use today."

On negative reaction from home fans:

"Yeah, they for sure also wished another result, like we did, so that's their right.

"They all come here to celebrate after 90 minutes with the team, for three points in the best occasion, and we couldn't deliver that today. Therefore, we are aware of that and that's normal in football.

"We can just control what we're doing now during the week. We can work hard, we need to work hard on the things I just mentioned to improve these things with the young lads and then see a different result.

"It was clear that there will be up and downs, and right now we're down, so we need to overcome that, and the only thing what we can do is to work on the things we can control, and that's hard work and training."

They Said

Celebrating his 100th PL win (including 25 with Arsenal) in his 197th game, Unai Emery said:

"We focused this match strong in our meetings before the game. This morning, just before the match as well, we were, everybody, aware about how important this match was.

"After our poor start, we have to try to keep balance in the table. We drew last week, of course, we accepted it against Brentford.

“We were not winning at home, we won on Wednesday in Champions League, very good victory, but again, in Premier League as a priority for the season, this competition, because through it we must achieve our objectives.

“I think today, the victory is really very fantastic. How we competed, how the players (won) duels, how the players as well (showed) their commitment, everybody, with the players (bringing) impact as well, they did fantastic.

“So, very happy. Grateful for our supporters as well, because they were with us here, enjoying the new time we are trying to build the team with some new players, as well with our demands.

"We defended fantastic in the first half, the second half. We scored one goal, we had some transitions as well to score the second goal, the first half, the second half.

"We needed, as well, Zion (Suzuki). Zion, he did a fantastic save, he did as well a lot of going to catch the ball when they were crossing. I think he did a fantastic job.

"More or less, we needed it, and we planned it. Set-pieces as well, we were defending fantastic.

"I think the players really, today, they did a fantastic job and we must feel proud of it, but as well understanding the matches are coming again – next week Viking, then on Saturday, Manchester City, then Carabao Cup.

"Of course, every competition, we must try to take those competitions, focusing strongly to try to build the team and to get our objectives.”

Stats

Newcastle set an unwanted all-time club record of 16 home games without a clean sheet in all competitions since the 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven at SJP in January 2026.

In Premier League games only at SJP, this was United's 13th failure to register a shutout since the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace last January. That matches their previous worst run in that competition, set between December 1998 and September 1999.

Joe Willock
clocked up his 150th PL game for Newcastle, Harvey Barnes made his 50th PL start as a Magpie and Lewis Miley reached 50 starts in league and cup games for the club.

Villa won successive visits to SJP for the first time since 1956/57 (1-2) and 1957/58 (2-4).

Waffle

Newcastle may have unveiled a new version of The Blaydon Races before kick-off on Saturday, but there weren't many smiling faces at St.James' Park by the full time whistle as the Magpies were beaten for the second time in six days.

Matthias Jaissle's side lost at home for the first time after a display bordering on the inept and was greeted by a chorus of boos at half and full time. There may only have been one goal in it, but the meeting of two sides requiring substantial close season rebuilds was decisively in favour of Villa.

With a measure of inevitability, the winner came from Johan Manzambi, who rejected a summer move to Tyneside in favour of Villa and was left unattended to nod home after 36 minutes.

United's most dangerous moment came early in the second half from the boot of Sven Botman, but unlike Monday's jet-propelled effort, he failed to find a way past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki with what proved to be the only effort on target throughout the whole game.

The sole change to the side that started at Coventry saw Joelinton return to captain the side from central midfield, as Matias Fernandez-Pardo replaced Jacob Murphy on the right and Yoane Wissa was restored to a centre forward role after his unthreatening deployment at number 10 last time out.

The ineffectiveness of that formation saw replacements warming at half time; Bazoumana Toure and Will Osula both introduced barely ten minutes after the restart as the tempo and frequency of United's attacks increased, but the quality of crossing remained uniformly poor.

Aside from the Botman snap shot, nothing remotely troubled Suzuki as the minutes ticked away and the home side's efforts became desperate, culminating in Dan Burn appearing to leading the attack as he had done at Coventry.

A team lacking poise or coherence failed to trouble a Villa side who needed only to be workmanlike to take all three points and could have won by more: Buendia's 39th minute shot hit a post and bouncing off the unwitting Hornicek and the 'keeper denying substitute Ross Barkley in the 74th minute.

In contrast, Newcastle never looked like scoring seemed set to concede every time Villa attacked. Like the old badge, clean sheets and set piece chances now seem to be part of our history.....

Jaissle may have spoken about his players needing to show a reaction in this game following the Coventry loss, but like his selections and tactics, the gap between aspiration and reality at present is visible. The reaction was insipid, the effort misplaced, the spark missing.

To our eyes there is a credibility issue with this coach and his players; a paying audience largely unconvinced by what they've seen and heard thus far. Jaissle's "vertical football" is in danger of emulating Ruud Gullit's "sexy football." On today's evidence, vertical means downwards.

It's by no means a lost cause, but to see our form deteriorating week by week in what looks like an even more mediocre league than last season is hardly comforting.

Starting next Sunday, we desperately need to capitalise on the lack of European football this season with some focus and composure on the field, as opposed to this rushed rubbish.

Fresh from a 0-5 drubbing at Brighton, we'll face a Palace side who will have played in Turkey on the Thursday. Screw that one up and questions about leadership and direction deserve to be asked.
