Goals

Half time: Eagles 0 Magpies 0

47 mins Amir Dedic progressed in the Palace half before knocking the ball out to Jacob Murphy towards the right touchline. Home defender Jaydee Canvot tracked his run but wasn't prepared for the winger to immediately ping over a curling cross.

That centre fell perfectly for William Osula to nip between the unsuspecting Chris Richards and Alex Disasi and guide the ball home from just inside the six yard box as it dropped into his path.
1-0

58 mins In possession around 30 yards from the home goal in a central position, Nico Gonzalez twisted away from Adam Wharton and found Murphy to his right. Seeing Dedic make an untracked overlapping run into the box, he fed the ball to him and saw the Bosnian pull it back for Harvey Barnes to evade Anan Khalaili plant a right-footed shot in from almost on the penalty spot. 2-0

Full time: Eagles 0 Magpies 2

We Said

Matthias Jaissle said:

"Today we went for more experience and leadership skills.

"It was a tough game especially in the first half. But the second half was much better and we threatened the opposition more. If we are all together - this journey can be successful.

"In the first half we weren't bad out of possession, but we did not have an offensive mindset. We had the handbrake on. In the second half we moved and we deserved to win,"

"
It was a tough game, especially in the first half. We couldn't get ourselves the reward for the intensity we put in out of possession after the ball wins.

"In the second half, it was much better. We were more target-orientated, we threatened the opposition more and, therefore, I think when it comes to the second half and that improvement.

"In the end, also that willingness to defend and to have that clean sheet. It was a deserved win.”

On Will Osula:

"A striker's job, right?. He did an amazing job. We're happy that he's getting back on track.

"He was out for a long time, so now physically, he's improving - and he's a player with huge potential."

On Lewis Miley:

"
Unfortunately, he was not able to be in the squad at Palace due to an issue with his glutes. But hopefully, we will bring him back as soon as possible. The medical department is doing a great job."

They Said

Pierre Sage said:

"I think we missed 15 minutes in this game: the first 15 minutes in the second-half.

"We left a lot of things in the dressing room and didn’t come back on the pitch with that, and when you give space, when you give all the aggression to the opponent, at the end you pay for that, and that was the case today.

"I think it’s only mental because after the second goal conceded we started to play again and we pushed to come back without success.

“But during this first 15 minutes there was nothing in our play, nothing in our body language, things like this. We were not on the pitch, not on the play, and we paid for that.

“Today we have too many things we did badly during these 15 minutes to expect something else.”

Waffle

Following wins at Spurs and Millwall this season, Matthias Jaissle's side claimed another victory and clean sheet in London thanks to a scintillating 15-minute second half spell on Sunday.

Arriving at Selhurst Park following 1-4 defeats in their previous two away games, a much-changed United side rarely looked in danger of conceding, but created virtually nothing in what was an incident-free opening period.

Things were rather more exciting following the half time interval, incisive attacking moves bringing goals for Will Osula and Harvey Barnes, book-ending a Joe Willock finish that was subsequently ruled out by VAR due to a marginal offside.

Osula opened the scoring here last season and neatly tucked away Jacob Murphy's right wing cross within three minutes of the restart, before Willock was thwarted five minutes later after he ran on to Joelinton's through ball and showed some welcome composure to fire into the far corner.

That was given onfield then chalked off by VAR but United continued their pursuit of a second goal against a stunned Eagles side and after Barnes saw one effort deflected wide, he tucked away his next chance - meeting a low ball infield from Dedic on the right side of the box to replicate his Carabao Cup winner against West Bromwich Albion at Gallowgate.

Dedic was one of five changes to the starting line-up beaten at home by Aston Villa eight days earlier; Dan Burn, Fabian Schar, Murphy and Osula selected as Lewis Miley, Sven Botman, Malick Thiaw, Mathias Fernandez-Pardo and Yoanne Wissa were all omitted.

It looked like more goals would follow, with Joelinton and Barnes firing over the bar and substitutes Wissa and Anthony Elanga threatening to hit Palace on the break - the Swede making a welcome return after missing four matches through injury. He's yet to lose this season in six outings.

There were also welcome appearances for fit-again Jacob Ramsey and Sean Steur, while Lewis Hall led by example throughout and provided much of United's threat in a first half when Barnes and Murphy struggled to make any meaningful contribution. Neither could have complained if they'd been stood down at half time, but thankfully both remained on the field to make decisive contributions.

At the other end, Lukas Hornicek earned only his second Premier League clean sheet making notable stops at 2-0 to deny both Adam Wharton and Dario Osorio.

Shipping five goals without reply at Brighton the previous weekend ahead of Thursdays energy-sapping 2-2 Europa League draw in Turkey, the Eagles lacked any spark or flair as home followers looked on in almost total silence - due in part to their poor form but also a sequence of events culminating in the dissolution of the small but vocal Holmesdale fanatics group.

Conceding two goals prompted just two home replacements, habitual tormentor Jean-Philippe Mateta trudging off after getting little change from the experienced centre half pairing.

Palace's energy levels did increased and they applied a measure of pressure but, their attempts at gaining a foothold in the game remained unconvincing and full time arrived amid boos from those home followers who hadn't left early, speculation over the future of their coach Pierre Sage increasing.

His opposite number meanwhile beamed as he cuddled his coaches: Jaissle back in the spotlight or positive reasons thanks to a team selection that was vindicated and half time instructions that bore fruit long enough to outwit a side that were there for the taking.

By no means a classic, an overdue first Selhurst success since Steve Bruce's side won here behind closed doors in 2020 was greeted with relief by those present, who hadn't applauded a winning side off here in 12 visits since Paul Dummett's extra time League Cup winner 12 years ago.

This may not have been a must-win game, but taking three points was unarguably timely in terms of preserving the credibility of the coach and his players - something that had begun to come under scrutiny following successive defeats. Instead, the carnival moves on somewhere, at least this week.

Our issues - and Jaissle's - haven't magically gone away, reaching half time scoreless only after a collectively rank opening 45 minutes, during which Schar looked to have given away a penalty kick. Had that decision gone against us, things may not have been quite as jolly.

After getting a tune out of his wise old heads, the "rock star" manager still faces the conundrum of integrating an expensively-assembled cast of younger players - something for Sporting Director Ross Wilson to contemplate as he posed for the post-match victory photo in the away dressing room.
