Pointless after their first three PL2 matches, Newcastle U21s
rose to the occasion on Monday night, twice coming from behind to
win in front of over 5,000 fans at St.James' Park - the largest home
reserve crowd in over 20 years.
Playing at Gallowgate for the first time in 18 months, the hosts twice
cancelled out goals from the pink-clad mackems with eye-catching
efforts of their own, before a memorable and well-celebrated
clincher in the closing stages.
United, made and missed a quartet of presentable chances in the
first half hour, goalkeeper Isaac Allen equal to a pair of shots on
target from Johnny Emerson, while Afner Ca and Matheos Ferreira both
missed the target when well placed.
The visitors then caught Newcastle with a sucker punch eight minutes
before the interval; a soft free kick award allowing Tom Proctor to
centre from the right and Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi to glance a header
home.
Emerson's powerful shot rebounded back off the woodwork on 43
minutes before United made a breakthrough after 58 minutes when Kyran
Thompson ran half the length of the field to confidently fire
past Allen.
However the black and whites fell behind again just five minutes
later when Felix Scott emphatically beat Roman Dowell.
Seung-soo had only been on the field for three minutes when
he entered the left hand of the box and smashed a 70th minute drive into the far
corner of the Gallowgate net.
United then went in front for the first time in the 85th minute when
substitute Vakhtang Salia was lurking behind defender Ben Kindon as Kyle Fitzgerald's
dangerous cross from the right flank dropped, heading it back across
goal and into the net.
And that's how it stayed; Seung-soo and Alex Lienard clashing
in the final seconds of normal time, prompting a mass confrontation, bookings for the pair and almost 10 additional
minutes.
Bottom of the league at kick-off, victory saw Robbie Stockdale's
side rise four places up the table.
