Joelinton made contact with Thierno Barry in the centre of the field halfway into the home half as the pair contested a 3-50/50 challenge; play belatedly pulled back for an Everton free kick after Barry sprang up in the manner of a scalded cat.

With Dedic dawdling the free kick taken and the ball sent behind Anthony Elanga to the unattended Tyrique George, who had a clear run at goal from the left side of the United box.  His routine shot was fumbled by Lukas Hornicek and touched into the empty Leazes net by Barry - VAR confirming that the goalscorer was onside and  contact he made with Fabian Schar that drew blood wasn't illegal.

We Said

Matthias Jaissle said:

"
They (players) have trained on a high level in the build-up, but when the ref started the game you couldn’t see that.

"It wasn’t the plan to shoot the long balls, it’s important to say that. It was not good enough and it was not brave enough to penetrate the last line.

"The goal came from an unforced error that led to a free-kick, but to be honest we were just sleeping. It’s so easy for them to take the quick free-kick and we were surprised. On a good day of course, Lukas (Hornicek) saves it.

"We have to stick together now, we have to show unity. It’s the only way. When the goals aren’t coming easily you lack confidence, it’s normal as a human being.

"We saw during the week (the quality is there) but we need to take it to the pitch. It’s clear I have the responsibility to make it work as the manager of this club.

"Long balls was not the plan. It's something we need to work on. We lack confidence; to come out of that, we need to stick together. We need to make a fast learning curve in the right direction.

"I was aware of the anger (from home fans). Big frustration, big disappointment because we couldn't transfer what we saw in the week.

"The team was training at a high level, but since the ref started the game, not much was seen. It's difficult to understand. Of course the fans are frustrated, like we are.

"
That was the frustrating part. We played with a double six today, who should have supported our centre-backs to break the first line. But we couldn’t bring them into the game.

“We were not brave enough or courageous enough to break that line, to play on the ground. It looked really good in the training session, but there was almost nothing to see from those aspects in the game.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't deliver. Actually, over the whole 90 minutes, it was not our game and our style of playing.

"That is something we are very frustrated and disappointed about. If you cannot deliver when it counts, then you don't deserve to win. We were not brave enough in possession, too many long balls.

"The lads looked committed and the confidence was there. Today from the start the confidence was missing. We need to improve really fast."

On the ineffectiveness of William Osula:

"
We could not bring him into situations. We need to jump the first lines with clear balance on how we want to play football.

"Just playing long balls is for sure not the sign he prefers and it was not the plan; that is something you clearly need to mention.

"This is now the next step to clearly analyse it in-depth, and ask why we could not start the game as we originally planned."

From The Chronicle:

Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar was handed a tactical note in the dying stages against Everton from Matthias Jaissle as the head coach made a late tweak.

But the note, which indicated that Jaissle was prepared to go for broke and throw six players forward, was quickly dumped on the floor by the former Swiss defender. One of the half-dozen players told to overload Everton, Bazoumana Toure, had given Schar the piece of paper before creating a late chance for Yoane Wissa.

Toure was told to play on the left with Jacob Murphy operating on the right wing while Yoane Wissa and William Osula were ordered to lead the line as a front two with Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes right behind them.

They Said

David Moyes said:

"
They are so good in what they do as they give everything they've got.

"They're a brilliant group of players and they've had it tough as well. They want to keep winning and they've found it difficult with the way things have gone, but they're pulling it out and doing their best to be in all the games.

"It's never easy ... we beat Newcastle on Thursday night and to beat them again today is not an easy thing to do for any club and this level.

"To come here and get a good win tonight was a great result for us.

"We've actually done quite well in some of the games getting draws in difficult away games, but we've not picked up a victory and last season we had a great run of results away from home.

"So I was hoping to pick it up tonight and thankfully we did, clean sheet and got the goal that counted."

On Jordan Pickford's save:

"He's had some brilliant saves for us. The only compliment I can give him is that it's what we expect from him. He's maturing and is a lot calmer in a lot of his actions. He's maturing with age as well."

On Thierno Barry:

"We're thrilled he's getting the goals because you need your centre forward to score. He has missed a few but thankfully tonight he was on the spot to get the goal."

Stats

United set an unwanted Premier League record of 14 home games without a clean sheet, one more than their previous worst run from December 1998 to September 1999.

The record-breaking sequence of home league and cup games without a shutout is now 17, since a 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven in January 2026.

Harvey Barnes
reached a century of Premier League appearances for Newcastle (52 starts).

Everton won at Gallowgate for a third successive season - the first time they've ever done so.

Waffle

For the second time in five days, Newcastle proved to be incapable of containing or damaging a thoroughly average Everton side, as the mood on Tyneside worsened further.

David Moyes had failed to guide the Toffees to an Premier League away success in nine attempts since winning at Gallowgate in February, but another passive Toon display saw him end that wait.

A barren opening half brought few chances and no goals; the home defence reaching the interval intact after twice living dangerously in time added on; Jake O'Brien heading wide and Harrison Armstrong badly miscuing his shot.

That changed four minutes after the restart, when United were caught sleeping from a free kick given for a non-challenge by Joelinton and sent behind Anthony Elanga to the unattended Tyrique George.

His routine shot was fumbled by Lukas Hornicek and touched into the empty Leazes net by Thierno Barry - VAR confirming that the goalscorer was onside and the contact he made with Fabian Schar that drew blood wasn't illegal.

The reaction from the home side was negligible, as they seemed to be under the illusion that possession in the opposition half was the same as actually attacking.

Jordan Pickford's goal was finally threatened when a 65th minute ball from the left hand side the box reached Elanga adjacent to the back post, only for his shot to strike the goal frame and roll along the line before being cleared.

Substitute Yoane Wissa was then denied in the final seconds of normal time, Pickford sticking out his foot to block a shot from 12 yards, the chance created by Bazoumana Toure.

The only efforts on target by a home player during eight minutes of added time came from the boot of Jacob Ramsey - although it was Everton players rather than the ball that he kicked twice inside 90 seconds and rightly saw red.

The mediocrity of the opposition - and so far this season, the league, adds to the frustration of watching a team who look ill-equipped to carry out their master's bidding, players shoehorned into inappropriate positions.

Jaissle will get the flak, but the lack of intelligence shown by players isn't all at his door. Seldom has a team stacked with alleged internationals looked so unconvincing and that's just the ones he's picking; the recruitment policy that brought such a lop-sided squad also has to come under scrutiny.

A lack of guile or variety makes us incredibly easy to play against and outwit - dwindling belief in the stands stemming from a succession of anonymous displays across the field and the absence of a striker worthy of the description. The league table doesn't reflect our situation - yet.

There's a lack of faith in Newcastle United 2.0 so far and we're struggling to be optimistic that it will get any better. Nobody here has enhanced their reputation this season on Barrack Road except the fan whose shot on target in the half time competition sent him and his fiancee to Las Vegas.

That other teams are struggling is of no solace: this was a tough watch, another joyless spectacle with no spark from the crowd for the players or vice versa. Messrs Hopkinson, Wilson and Jaissle may not have seen this before, but plenty here tonight have.

Watching this game brought it home to us that the disconnect between those on and off the pitch is at a level that we've not endured since the Bruce-era COVID lockout days. Deeply troubling.
